How GW handles TOEFL scores
Send TOEFL scores with institution code 5246, which every GW page above gives. Graduate scores may not be more than two years old. SEAS and Columbian College both say they do not accept TOEFL MyBest scores, and SEAS notes that TOEFL offers an at-home testing option. Undergraduate Admissions does not accept institutional test scores.
Graduate Admissions says its minimums are subject to change as schools confirm policies for the coming year.
TOEFL iBT score reports from January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score; our guide to the new TOEFL score scale explains how the two scales appear on a report.
For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.5 (7.5 to waive EAP), and the graduate admissions page sets IELTS 6.5 overall.

If your TOEFL score is below GW's level
None of these pages offers conditional admission. The safety net is EAP: at SEAS, scores below 100 or 5.0 mean a first-semester EAP course whose credits do not count toward your degree. Undergraduates may also be placed in EAP during their first year, and GW says it may recommend EAP even when your score meets the waiver level.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your GW programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
