What TOEFL score do you need for UMass Amherst?

Both offices accept the in-person TOEFL iBT or the iBT Home Edition only, and neither accepts TOEFL MyBest scores, TOEFL Essentials or the TOEFL ITP Plus for China. UMass Amherst does not superscore English tests. The institution code is 3917.

Undergraduate score reports must be no older than two years at the time of application and come directly from the testing service. Graduate scores expire after two years and must still be valid for your expected date of entry.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS 6.5 with no subscore below 6.0 for first-year applicants, and the graduate page sets IELTS Academic 6.5.

Neither page offers conditional admission or a pathway programme. First-year applicants may ask for a waiver if their whole four-year secondary education was at an English-medium school following a British or American curriculum, at the Director's discretion. Transfer applicants may be exempt with two non-ESL English composition courses and several humanities or social science courses graded B or better at a US college.
