Exemptions

For graduate entry, a bachelor's or higher degree from a university in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA can exempt you, with prior approval from GIST.

For undergraduate entry, native speakers from the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand are exempt. Undergraduate tests must be taken within 2 years before the online application deadline. The guide notes that some nationalities, Pakistan among them, may need IELTS for the visa.

Conditional graduate admission

GIST allows conditional graduate admission for applicants from countries without official tests, or who cannot take one because of schedule conflicts or cost. They submit a certificate of English-medium instruction from the President or Dean of their last school, then must submit qualifying official scores within 6 months of admission or be removed from the register.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one in the current GIST application guide for your programme, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
