HEC Paris MBA English scores
From the HEC Paris MBA requirements page. Candidates choose one of the tests below. For TOEFL, the page names the CEFR level rather than a total score.
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| IELTS | 7.0 overall, at least 6.5 on each part |
| TOEFL | CEFR level C1 (5 out of 6 points) |
| PTE | 72 (the page does not name the version) |
| Duolingo English Test | 135 |
| TOEIC | 850 Listening and Reading, 340 Speaking and Writing |
| Cambridge English (First, Advanced, Proficiency, Business) | 185, at least 176 on each part |
Waiver, validity and the rest of the file
The requirement applies to non-native English speakers who do not hold a degree from a university where English is the teaching language, so an English-medium degree removes the test. Results must be less than two years old. The page says English is the only language required for admission.
The checklist also asks for an official GMAT, GMAT Focus, GMAC Executive Assessment or GRE score, a CV in English, essays and two recommendations. HEC says it has no minimum score for any of those assessments, and holders of a top-ranked Master in Management may qualify for a test waiver.
HEC encourages at least two years of professional experience, and the page says the ideal candidate has between 2 and 10 years, with a 6-year average for the Class of 2025. Applicants without an undergraduate degree can be considered only in the cases the page lists.

Other HEC programmes, and checking your offer
HEC's Master in Management admissions page says all candidates must submit proof of English proficiency through the TOEIC (all four parts), TOEFL, IELTS iBT or a Cambridge exam, but it gives no score. The test is waived for English natives and for candidates who completed their entire degree in English. Do not assume the MBA figures apply to other HEC programmes.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your HEC Paris programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the HEC Paris MBA publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
