University English requirements

What TOEFL score do you need for Heidelberg University?

Heidelberg University sets TOEFL levels programme by programme. The MSc Economics and the Master's in Scientific Computing ask for TOEFL iBT 90, and the MA Transcultural Studies asks for 100 as proof of C1 English. There is no single university-wide TOEFL score, so the programme page decides what you need.

Test rules at Heidelberg

None of these pages gives TOEFL section minimums, a validity period, a Home Edition rule or an institution code. The MSc Economics page says applicants with a school or university degree from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK or Ireland can use that degree instead of a test.

On the same pages, IELTS is 6.5 with no band below 6.0 for the MSc Economics, 6.5 for Scientific Computing and 7.0 for Transcultural Studies.

TOEFL iBT score reports issued since January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 total; see our guide to the new TOEFL score scale. The page above gives only 0 to 120 figures, so that is what this guide reports.

If your TOEFL score falls short

The pages list other accepted proofs rather than a conditional route. The MSc Economics accepts the Cambridge CAE or Heidelberg's own central language lab certificate with at least "good", and Transcultural Studies accepts a C1 certificate from your university's language department.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Heidelberg programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
