Exemptions and English-taught degrees

Economics exempts applicants whose school diploma, bachelor's or master's comes from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK or Ireland. A degree from any other country needs an accepted English certificate, and an exchange semester abroad does not count. Scientific Computing tells applicants from countries with English as the teaching language to see its FAQ for replacements.

The MATS page does not offer a medium-of-instruction exemption. Its alternative is a C1 certificate from your university's language department.

Germany's student visa sets no IELTS band of its own: Heidelberg University sets the English requirement for admission, and that is the score to plan around. Our IELTS for Germany guide covers the visa side and test fees.

English requirements in Germany are written into each programme's admission or examination regulations and can change between intakes. The score that binds you is the one on your Heidelberg programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.
