University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for LMU Munich?

LMU Munich does not publish one English score for all programmes. It says only that English-taught programmes need a very good command of English, and each programme sets the proof. Examples: the M.Sc. Economics asks IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80, Management and Digital Technologies asks IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 95, and Epidemiology asks for no test at all.

How LMU sets English requirements

LMU's international degree programmes page lists its English-taught master's degrees and says you must prove "a very good command of English". It gives no university-wide IELTS, PTE or TOEFL score. Each programme's application page states the tests it accepts and the minimums.

None of the three programme pages below names PTE Academic or Duolingo. If you plan to take one of them, ask your programme first.

English-taught degrees instead of a test

The Economics page accepts a degree from an English-language institution only with official proof that teaching was entirely in English. It says English must be explicitly mentioned on the transcript or degree certificate; a separate university letter is not mentioned. Management and Digital Technologies exempts native speakers and holders of a degree taught entirely in English, with supporting documentation.

Economics also lets you apply before your result arrives: upload an informal petition and send the result by email by 31 August.

Germany's student visa sets no IELTS band of its own: LMU sets the English requirement for admission, and that is the score to plan around. Our IELTS for Germany guide covers the visa side and test fees.

English requirements in Germany are written into each programme's admission or examination regulations and can change between intakes. The score that binds you is the one on your LMU programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Frequently asked questions

Does LMU Munich accept PTE?+

LMU publishes no university-wide list. PTE Academic is not named on the Economics, Management and Digital Technologies or Epidemiology application pages, so check with your programme first.

What IELTS score does LMU need for a master's?+

It depends on the programme. The M.Sc. Economics asks IELTS Academic 6.5 overall; Management and Digital Technologies asks 7.0.

Is there an LMU master's with no IELTS?+

Yes. The M.Sc. Epidemiology says it requires no formal proof such as IELTS or TOEFL; English is assessed through the entry test or GRE and the interview.

Can a medium-of-instruction letter replace IELTS at LMU?+

Only where the programme says so. Economics wants English stated on your transcript or degree certificate; Management and Digital Technologies accepts a degree taught entirely in English with supporting documents.
