HUST English scores
From HUST's 2026 application guide for international undergraduates and its 2026 guide for international graduate students.
| Programme | IELTS | Other tests |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's, English-medium | 5.5 | TOEFL 80, or other accepted certificates |
| Master's, English-medium | 6.0 | TOEFL 80 or GRE 310 |
| Doctoral, English-medium | 6.0 | TOEFL 80 or GRE 310 |
Exemptions and the online language test
Both guides waive the certificate when your previous education was taught in English. The undergraduate guide also waives it for applicants whose mother tongue is English, after confirmation.
Graduate applicants take an online language test of objective questions after submitting their application, before paying the fee. Bachelor's applicants also need a CSCA report. PTE and Duolingo are not named.

Dates and age limits
Bachelor's applications for 2026 ran from 15 October 2025 to 15 June 2026, and graduate applications from 15 October 2025 to 1 March 2026. Master's applicants must be under 35 and doctoral applicants under 40. The application fee is 600 CNY (100 USD).
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your HUST programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
