Exemptions and the extra English test
The admissions guide says applicants whose mother tongue is English, or who hold previous degrees taught in English, can be exempted from TOEFL, TOEFL Essentials and IELTS if Wuhan University approves.
For the scholarship route, applicants without a standard test result can send proof of earlier study where English was the teaching language, but must then take an extra oral or written English test set by the university. PTE and Duolingo are not named on either page.

Age limits, interview and fees
Master's applicants should generally be no older than 35 and doctoral applicants no older than 45. Those who pass the document review move to an interview and entrance exam. The application fee is RMB 800 (US$111), and you must show a bank statement of at least US$5,000. Scholarship applications for 2026 ran from 15 November 2025 to 25 February 2026.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Wuhan University programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Wuhan University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
