How to pay, and the 72-hour deadline

After booking online you pay by bank transfer, through your bank's website or app, or in cash; the British Council says HSBC accepts cash deposits, and a 1% stamp duty is added to cash payments under tax rules. Email the proof of payment, with your full name, registration reference and the payer's name if different, to the British Council's Algeria information address (British Council).

Payment is due within 72 hours of registering, and sooner if you book in the week of the test. Bring the same passport or national ID card you booked with; a different or expired document means you cannot sit the test.

Cancellation, refund and UK visa rules

The British Council's Algerian pages do not include a standard-IELTS refund page, and IELTS says detailed terms vary by centre (IELTS), so check the terms at booking. For IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills the published IELTS rules apply: cancel more than 14 days ahead and you get 75% back, within 14 days but more than two days ahead 50%, within two days 25%, and nothing on or after test day. A UKVI booking can be transferred once, more than 14 days ahead, to a date within three months, and the centre may charge up to 25%. (IELTS UKVI terms).

IELTS for UKVI runs only in Algiers. For a UK Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa, the British Council lists the requirement as CEFR B2: at least 5.5 in each of the four parts of IELTS for UKVI. B1 still applies to people already on those routes before 8 January 2026 who are only extending. See IELTS for the UK Skilled Worker visa.
