What ACS says about English
The FAQ on ACS's information for applicants page asks "Does ACS require an English language test for a skills assessment?" and answers: "No. ACS does not require any English language tests for skills assessments." The same answer appears on the ACS Migration Skills Assessment page (both read 6 October 2026).
ACS assesses whether your qualifications and work experience are at a professional ICT level and closely related to your nominated ANZSCO occupation, using SFIA. The one English rule is about paperwork: original documents not in English must be translated, and you upload both the original and the translation (ACS document translation). ACS says to allow 4 to 6 weeks when no extra documents are requested.
ACS assessment pathways: none needs an English test
ACS has four assessment pathways. The FAQ answer above covers skills assessments in general, so no pathway adds an English test.
| ACS pathway | Who ACS says it is for | English test at ACS |
|---|---|---|
| Post Australian Study | Australian bachelor's or higher with an IT, Data Science or Cyber Security major, plus 1 year of relevant Australian IT work or the ACS Professional Year | Not required |
| General Skills | Experienced professionals with recognised tertiary qualifications; the most common pathway | Not required |
| Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) | Experienced professionals without formal IT tertiary qualifications; two RPL project reports and vendor certificates | Not required |
| Qualification Only | Australian diploma or associate degree graduates applying for the 485 Post-Vocational Education Work stream | Not required |

Home Affairs sets English levels per skill, and IELTS Academic and General Training are both accepted. The scores below were re-read on the Competent, Proficient and Superior English pages on 6 October 2026. For PTE and other tests, the 3-year window and passport exemptions, see our 189, 190 and 491 visa guide.
Many ICT applicants aim for Proficient or Superior English because of the points. If you are applying for a 485 visa through the Qualification Only pathway, the 485 has its own English rules: see our 485 visa guide.
Rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current requirement on the Home Affairs English language page before you book a test or apply. This guide restates that page as read on 6 October 2026; it is not migration advice.
| Home Affairs level | IELTS in each of the 4 skills | Points-tested visa effect |

| Competent English | 6 | Minimum when invited for 189, 190 and 491 (0 points) |
| Proficient English | 7 | 10 points |
| Superior English | 8 | 20 points |
Frequently asked questions
Does ACS require IELTS?+
No. ACS states that it does not require any English language tests for skills assessments.
Do I need IELTS before applying to ACS?+

What IELTS score do I need after a positive ACS assessment?+
For the 189, 190 and 491 visas, at least 6 in each skill (Competent English). 7 in each earns 10 points and 8 in each earns 20 points.
Does ACS accept documents in other languages?+
Only with a translation. ACS asks you to upload both the original document and its English translation.
Is IELTS General Training fine for the visa?+
Yes. Home Affairs lists both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training with the same scores for Competent, Proficient and Superior English.
