Alberta (CPSA): minimum English test scores
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta says all physicians practising in Alberta need to communicate clearly with patients in English and, unless exempt, must pass one of three tests within the 24 months before submitting a CPSA application (CPSA English Language Proficiency).
Confirm the requirement on your college's own page before you book a test, since each province sets its own.
| Test | CPSA minimum | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 in each of the four components | Within 24 months before applying |
| OET Medicine | Grade B in each component | Within 24 months before applying |
| CELPIP General | 9 in each component | Within 24 months before applying |
| PTE Academic, TOEFL | Not listed by CPSA | Not applicable |
Alberta exemptions and verification
CPSA exempts you if your medical school or postgraduate training was in a country where English is the first or native language, if more than 50% of your medical school and postgraduate training was in such a country, or if you are in independent practice in Canada or such a country and already met English requirements there (CPSA). Visiting elective trainees are exempt for their first 90 days.
CPSA must be able to verify your results, but may waive verification if your current regulator confirms the English evidence it accepted, its requirement and your accepted scores. Whether results from two sittings can be combined is not stated by CPSA.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario issues certificates of registration under Ontario Regulation 865/93. Its Requirements page lists, among the non-exemptible requirements, that every applicant can communicate effectively; an English test score is not stated by CPSO on that page, so ask CPSO what evidence it needs.
Other provinces have their own colleges and rules. This guide does not cover the Medical Council of Canada's exams or immigration; for study and visa-side IELTS rules see IELTS for Canada.
