Accepted tests and minimum scores
International General and Express pathway applicants must show English proficiency through one of four options. Option C is a test result, with these thresholds on the Board's English proficiency evidence page (updated 26 August 2026):
| Test | Minimum scores | Two-sitting note on the same page |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Reading, listening and speaking 7; writing 6.5 | Two sittings (including One Subject Resit) in six months, no score below 6.5 in either |
| OET | Reading, listening and speaking 350; writing 300 | Two sittings in six months, all areas examined both times, no score below 300 |
| PTE Academic | 65 overall and 65 in each skill | Two sittings in six months, 65 overall in each, no skill below 58 |
| TOEFL iBT | 94 total; listening 24, reading 24, writing 27, speaking 23 | Two sittings in six months, 94 in each; floors 20, 19, 24, 20 |
Can you combine two sittings? The page says two things
Under Option C, each test carries a note that scores may be obtained across two sittings in six months, with the floors shown above. Further down the same page, the answer to 'Do you accept scores split across multiple attempts?' is: the Board does not accept composite results from multiple examinations.
Because the page contradicts itself, ask the Board in writing before you rely on two sittings. The safe plan is to reach every score in a single IELTS Academic test.

Option A is confirmation that English is the first language you spoke; the Board has accepted passports from countries where English is the official language. Option B is a pre-registration physiotherapy qualification from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada or South Africa. Option D is other evidence acceptable to the Registrar, which you may only use with the Registrar's permission before you apply; letters from employers and universities are no longer enough on their own.
The Board says TOEFL iBT has changed its scoring scale and it expects to update the TOEFL requirement in October 2026. It also warns that applications containing AI-generated material are highly likely to be declined. Visa rules are not stated by the Board on this page.
Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand page before you book a test.
