Three ways to meet the 7.0
From the AASW English Language Policy, effective 20 May 2026. It applies to migration eligibility assessments and AASW membership for employment.
| Option | Scores needed | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| 1: one sitting | 7.0 overall and 7.0 in all four components | IELTS Academic at a test centre |
| 2: two sittings | 7.0 in each component across a maximum of two sittings | Both within six months; no component score below 6.5 |
| 3: One Skill Retake | 7.0 in three components, plus 7.0 in the retaken one | Fourth score not below 6.5; retake within 60 days of a full IELTS on computer test and within 12 months of your application |
Tests, validity and retakes
IELTS Academic, on computer or paper at an official IDP or British Council centre, is the only test the AASW accepts. It does not accept online IELTS tests. Results must be obtained within three years before you submit your AASW assessment.
You can sit IELTS Academic as many times as you need, but your submission must fit Option 1, 2 or 3. Any component score below 6.5 makes the result unacceptable. The AASW says its requirements may be higher than the Department of Home Affairs' visa requirements.

The AASW may exempt you if you completed all secondary education (Years 7 to 12) taught and assessed in English, and three or more years of full-time tertiary study at Bachelor level or higher taught and assessed in English, both in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the UK or the USA.
Evidence can be school and tertiary results, a school or education department letter, or a Statutory Declaration if results cannot be supplied. The AASW may still ask you to sit IELTS Academic. See its migration assessment FAQs. Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the AASW page before you book a test.
