The difference
LanguageCert's Academic page says both options have exactly the same format and content, but Academic SELT gives you a Unique Reference Number (URN) for your UK visa application. It tells you to choose Academic SELT at a UKVI test centre if your course is below degree level, such as a foundation, pathway or professional English course, or is somewhere that is not a Higher Education Institution.
| LanguageCert Academic | LanguageCert Academic SELT | |
|---|---|---|
| Format and content | Same | Same |
| Where | Test centre or online | UKVI-approved test centre |
| UK visa reference number (URN) | No | Yes |
| Typical use in the UK | Degree-level study at a university that accepts it | Below degree level, non-university providers, and other visas |
Why universities can accept the non-SELT version
For a Student visa at degree level or above, gov.uk says your Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself, so it may ask for a different test; the level must still be equivalent to CEFR B2. Below degree level you need B1, proved with a SELT from an approved provider if you have no qualifying qualification (gov.uk).
On gov.uk's SELT list, the approved LanguageCert tests are LanguageCert International ESOL SELT, Academic SELT and General SELT, and SELT results are valid for two years from the date the test is awarded (gov.uk). Plain LanguageCert Academic is not on that list.

How to decide
Ask your university which LanguageCert test it accepts and whether it will assess your English itself for the visa. If it names Academic SELT, or your course is below degree level, book the SELT. If you also need the result for another visa later, the SELT keeps that option open in the UK.
Scores needed for each visa level are in LanguageCert score for a UK visa, and UK centres are listed in LanguageCert SELT test centres. Rules and fees change. Check the test owner's own page for your country before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official advice from the test owner.
