What IELTS score do you need for London Film School?

London Film School (LFS) asks Student visa applicants whose first language is not English for a Secure English Language Test, most often IELTS for UKVI with 6.5 overall and at least 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The same IELTS level appears on the MA Filmmaking page. Graduates of an English-taught degree outside the approved countries need an Ecctis statement instead.Source: London Film School official English requirements · checked 31 October 2026

Who is exempt, and the Ecctis route for Indian degrees

You need no SELT if you are from a majority English-speaking country on the Home Office list or completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree there, if you are a Canadian national, or if you proved your English in a previous visa application. LFS also exempts postgraduate applicants who recently completed an undergraduate degree in the UK or Ireland.

If you recently completed a degree taught and assessed in English in a country not on the list, such as India, Pakistan or Nigeria, LFS asks for your certificate or transcript plus an English Proficiency and Qualification Comparison Statement from Ecctis. The statement must confirm both the academic level and the English level reached through the medium of instruction. Without it, you need a SELT.

MA Filmmaking fees and intakes

The MA Filmmaking runs over two years with intakes in September, January and May. For September 2026 starters, the total cost for international students is £68,952, and international applicants pay a non-refundable deposit of £11,942 to secure a place, plus a £50 application fee. IELTS for UKVI results take around 14 days, and LFS says you should be able to book a test within 28 days.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your LFS course page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where London Film School publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
