NFTS English requirement
From the NFTS students from abroad page, read 31 Oct 2026. Courses are taught and assessed in English, and the school expects fluent written and spoken English.
| Requirement | What NFTS asks for |
|---|---|
| IELTS (most applicants) | IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, 6.5 in each band |
| Level | CEFR B2 minimum on a SELT |
| Accepted SELT providers | IELTS SELT Consortium, LanguageCert, Pearson, PSI Skills for English (UKVI) |
| Validity | 2 years |
Who is exempt
You do not need to show your English level if you hold a full bachelor's or higher degree taught in English and awarded by a UK institution, or a full degree taught entirely in a country on the UKVI list of exceptions (Canada excluded). Canadian nationals with a full degree taught in Canada by a Canadian institution are also exempt. Distance learning and self-taught degrees do not count.
NFTS does not currently ask for an English certificate from students with EU settlement status or indefinite leave to remain. For other visa holders, English proficiency is reviewed case by case. Degrees from India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Bangladesh are not on the UKVI exceptions list, so applicants from those countries should plan on a SELT.

CAS, fees and how to check
NFTS issues a CAS once it has all your documents and your first-year tuition is paid in full, unless you pay through an approved finance or loan provider. Tuition fees are listed on each course page. The UKVI SELT page lists approved test centres.
Graduates of an NFTS MA can apply for the Graduate route from inside the UK after receiving final results and once the school has reported them to the Home Office.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your NFTS course page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the National Film and Television School (NFTS) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
