LSE PTE Academic minimums by requirement level
Graduate figures are from LSE's graduate English requirements for 2027/8 entry; each programme page says which level (A to D) applies. The undergraduate figure is from the undergraduate English requirements page.
| Programme or band | PTE overall | Minimum per skill |
|---|---|---|
| Graduate A: Standard (including MPhil/PhD Statistics) | 70 | 62 in each skill |
| Graduate B: Higher | 70 | Reading 70; listening, writing and speaking 62 |
| Graduate C: Research (MPhil/PhD, except Law and Statistics) | 70 | Reading 70, writing 70; listening and speaking 62 |
| Graduate D: Law (all Law Department programmes) | 78 | 70 in each skill |
| Undergraduate | 70 | 70 in all components, in one sitting |
Test rules and how PTE compares with IELTS at LSE
Both pages accept PTE Academic in person only; the graduate page says LSE does not accept the online test. Graduate tests must be less than two years old on 1 October 2027, and LSE expects the required level at a single sitting. Undergraduate tests must date from within two years of the programme start (1 September). LSE encourages graduate applicants to submit results with the application; without them, any offer is conditional on the score. The pages give no Pearson institution code.
On the same graduate table, Standard (PTE 70, 62 each) sits beside IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in each component, and Law (PTE 78, 70 each) beside IELTS 7.5 with 7.0 in each. The undergraduate PTE 70 (70 each) sits beside IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in each.

If your PTE score falls short
If you are set an English condition, LSE says you may be able to take a pre-sessional course at the LSE Language Centre. Graduate applicants who cannot take a preferred test may ask, through the extenuating circumstances form, to take an alternative test such as Duolingo or IELTS Indicator and supplement it with the LSE Language Centre Assessment.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your LSE programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
