University English requirements

What TOEFL score do you need for LSU?

Louisiana State University requires a TOEFL iBT score of 79 for automatic undergraduate admission and the same 79 for the Graduate School. The graduate minimum must come from a single test, and LSU does not recognise superscoring or MyBest scores. Both pages give TOEFL figures on the 0 to 120 scale only.

How LSU handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduate scores must be sent directly through the TOEFL website using LSU's school code, 6373. Almost all admitted international students then take an English placement test before registration.

At graduate level, official scores are those reported directly to LSU by the testing service. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date, and applicants with expired scores must retest.

New TOEFL iBT score reports also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 scale; our TOEFL new score scale guide explains it.

For comparison, the undergraduate page and the graduate page both set IELTS at 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below LSU's level

Undergraduates may be exempt with 500 on SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 18 on ACT English, a US high school diploma after four years in the US, a US bachelor's degree, or schooling in a country where English is the primary official language. LSU can still ask any applicant for a score. Graduate applicants with an accredited US bachelor's degree may be exempt. Neither page lists a conditional admission route.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your LSU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
