What PTE score do you need for McGill?

McGill accepts PTE Academic for undergraduate admission with an overall score of 65 or better and at least 60 in each component, and the result must be sent electronically to McGill by Pearson. Graduate admission is different: McGill's graduate proficiency page says PTE is not accepted for any graduate programme, so master's and PhD applicants need IELTS, TOEFL or another listed option.

Test rules and how to send your score

The undergraduate page asks you to arrange for Pearson to send your results electronically to McGill; applicants cannot upload results themselves. It says institutional versions of tests are not accepted, and it does not mention PTE Academic Online, PTE Core or a PTE validity period.

On the same page IELTS Academic needs 6.5 with 6.0 in each component, the same level as PTE 65 with 60 in each part. Duolingo needs 125, or 130 for the B.Ed. (TESL) and B.Com., but the page sets no higher PTE score for those programmes.

If you fall short, and graduate study

Both pages accept McGill's own Certificate of Proficiency in English from the School of Continuing Studies as an alternative to a test. For graduate study, the page lists TOEFL (4.5 on the new scale) and IELTS Academic 6.5, notes that IELTS Online and the One Skill Retake are not accepted, and adds that departments may ask for more.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your McGill programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
