How McGill handles TOEFL scores

The undergraduate page applies the 120-point table to tests up to 20 January 2026 and the 6-point table to tests from 21 January 2026. McGill's TOEFL institution code is 0935-00 (0935 on the graduate page).

McGill does not use TOEFL MyBest scores at either level, and the graduate page says an institutional version of the TOEFL is not acceptable. Graduate results must be sent directly by the testing service.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS Academic at 6.5 with 6.0 in each component, and the graduate page sets IELTS at 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below McGill's level

Neither page describes conditional admission for a low TOEFL score. At graduate level the McGill Certificate of Proficiency in English (or in English for Professional Communication) is listed as another way to prove proficiency, and graduate applicants with a degree from an English-medium institution or four years in an English-speaking country can usually skip the test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your McGill programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
