University English requirements

Does the MEXT scholarship require IELTS?

Not on JASSO's summary page. For embassy recommendation, research and teacher training applicants sit Japanese and English exams, and undergraduates also sit mathematics and science. The page does not list IELTS or TOEFL. For university recommendation it says requirements vary by accepting university, and detailed rules come from the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country.

Where IELTS might come in

JASSO says some application requirements are more detailed than the summary, and that you should check with the Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country and the latest application guidelines. If your target programme in Japan is taught in English, the university may also ask for a test as part of admission. This guide does not cover individual Japanese universities.
