What the NMC accepts
From the NMC's accepted English language tests and IELTS Academic pages, read 10 October 2026. The NMC says IELTS Academic and OET "are the only tests we can accept", so PTE does not count.
| Test | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic: required | 7 | 7 | 6.5 | 7 |
| IELTS Academic: floor in both sittings when combining | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6 | 6.5 |
| OET: required | B (350+) | B (350+) | C+ (300+) | B (350+) |
Option 1: combine two IELTS sittings
Sit a second full IELTS Academic within 12 months of the first. Across the two you need one score of at least 7 in listening, reading and speaking and one of at least 6.5 in writing, and every score in both sittings must be at least 6.5 (6 in writing). Both tests must be no more than two years old when the NMC assesses your application.
So with 7 / 7 / 6.0 / 7, a second sitting of, for example, 7 listening, 6.5 reading, 6.5 writing, 7 speaking works. A second sitting with 6.0 in reading would not, because 6.0 is below the 6.5 floor. You cannot combine an IELTS with an OET, and every sitting must test all four skills.

Option 2: OET, and options that do not work
OET Nursing asks C+ (300) in writing and B (350) in the rest; the NMC accepts OET on paper, on computer and OET@Home. Nurses who find IELTS Task 2 essays hard often prefer writing a referral letter (OET vs IELTS for nurses).
Not accepted by the NMC: IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS Online and the IELTS Indicator. If after exhausting the combining options you have narrowly missed the score in only one skill, the NMC says you may be able to use supporting information from your current UK employer (NMC).
To lift writing from 6.0 to 6.5, focus on Task 2 structure and range rather than length; see IELTS writing 6.5 to 7 and get an essay scored with a free IELTS mock test.
