NCNZ minimum OET scores
The most common way to show English for registration is an approved test, and the Council approves two: OET and IELTS Academic (Nursing Council of New Zealand). It does not accept PTE.
| Skill | OET minimum | IELTS Academic minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 350 | 7 |
| Listening | 350 | 7 |
| Writing | 300 | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 350 | 7 |
More than one sitting
You can achieve the minimum scores over more than one sitting, but the required scores must be achieved within 12 months of first sitting the test, and all sittings must be completed within the three years before your application (Nursing Council of New Zealand). The page does not set a lower floor for the other sittings.

OET on Computer yes, OET@Home no
The Council does not currently accept online computer-based tests. It does accept computer-based tests at an approved testing centre, and says this includes OET on computer at an approved venue with the speaking sub-test hosted online (Nursing Council of New Zealand). OET@Home is fully remote-proctored on your own computer (OET@Home), so it does not fit that rule.
When you may not need a test
TruMerit may invite you to apply for an alternative English evidence pathway if the education that led to your registration was taught and examined in English in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Ireland, Canada or the United States, or if you hold current nursing registration in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada or the United States that required an English test (Nursing Council of New Zealand). These are assessed case by case at the Council's discretion and can lengthen assessment; if declined, you need an approved test.
OET also says Immigration NZ accepts it for ANZSCO level 4 and 5 roles (OET New Zealand); check the visa's own page for scores.
