How to get from PTE 58 to 65

Why overall 58 usually hides one low skill

PTE's overall score is not a simple average of the four communicative skills, but a low speaking or writing score pulls it down hardest because those skills are scored by the tasks that also contribute to listening and reading. A candidate with listening 65, reading 64, speaking 48 and writing 60 shows an overall near 58. Fixing speaking to 60 moves the overall past 62 on its own. The tasks that pay twice

Read Aloud scores speaking and reading. Repeat Sentence scores speaking and listening and is the single largest contributor to both. Write from Dictation scores listening and writing and is the largest contributor to writing. Summarize Spoken Text scores listening and writing. Spend two-thirds of your practice time on these four; a weak Describe Image costs less than a weak Repeat Sentence.

For a 58 candidate whose speaking is low, the fault is almost always oral fluency: pauses, restarts and a flat rhythm. Content is usually fine. Record Read Aloud attempts and re-record until there are no restarts; the fluency score follows within days.

A three-week plan

Week 1: 20 Repeat Sentence and 10 Read Aloud a day, scored, until fluency and pronunciation stop moving. Write from Dictation daily, 15 items, checking spelling and every function word.

Week 2: add Summarize Spoken Text and Summarize Written Text, one sentence each, and Write Essay twice a week under 20 minutes. Keep the speaking drills at half volume.

Week 3: two full scored mocks, three days apart. If speaking is at or above 60 and writing at or above 62, the overall usually lands at 64 to 66. Use the PTE to IELTS converter to confirm the band you are aiming at.
