Rules, comparisons and data

What personal data does PTE collect on test day?

Pearson's security policy says that on test day it takes your photograph, your signature, a scan of your palm vein pattern and, for certain tests, a spoken personal introduction, and it may copy your ID. Test centres use CCTV, and video and audio are recorded throughout the test. The data can be shared with governments and institutions processing an application that includes your PTE results.

Who it can be shared with

Pearson says data may be shared with government authorities or higher education institutions processing an application you submitted that includes PTE results, or that you nominated to receive your scores (Pearson). Its malpractice policy adds that malpractice decisions can be shared with visa authorities and institutions that accessed your score.

For tests booked in Australia, Pearson's terms say your data will be exported to the UK, the US, the Philippines and any jurisdiction you nominate to receive scores, in line with the Privacy Act 1988. Pearson's privacy policy sets out what it collects and how it is protected.

How the checks affect you

Your ID is checked again electronically when you leave the room (handbook). If Pearson's biometric systems flag a security issue, the investigation can hold your score beyond five working days (scoring help); see why a PTE score is delayed.

If a hand injury would prevent the palm vein scan, contact Pearson before booking, or you will be turned away and lose your fee.
