What PTE Core score do I need for the Start-up Visa?

IRCC's Start-up Visa language page asks for CLB 5 in all four skills: on PTE Core, at least reading 42, writing 51, listening 39 and speaking 51. However, IRCC lists the programme as paused. Only applicants with a valid 2025 commitment certificate could apply, by 30 June 2026, and it is closed to all other applications.

Programme status on 30 October 2026

IRCC's Start-up Visa page, dated 21 July 2026, shows the status as paused. It says applicants needed a valid 2025 commitment certificate and had to apply by 30 June 2026, and that the programme is closed to all other applications. The work permit section is closed to new applicants.

So taking PTE Core now for a new Start-up Visa application would not help unless IRCC reopens the programme. Check the page for changes before you book.

Where PTE Core still applies

PTE Core remains accepted across IRCC's open economic programmes. Pearson describes it as accepted for all economic immigration programmes requiring an IRCC-approved English test (Pearson). See the Express Entry minimums.

IRCC changes programme rules and score tables from time to time. Check the linked canada.ca page before you book a test or apply. This guide is general information, not immigration advice.
