The task
You hear a recording of 20–70 seconds, once. The last word or group of words is replaced by a beep, and you choose the option that best completes it. Each item has three to five options and one correct answer. The next recording does not start until you click Next, so you can still change your choice (Pearson).
How it is scored
Pearson judges your ability to predict what a speaker will say from context. The response is correct or incorrect, with no credit for no response or a wrong one. It affects listening only; reading is used only for the instructions and options (Pearson). Follow the speaker's line of argument rather than single words, because the missing part usually completes the main point. Since there is no deduction, always choose an option before you click Next. These are our tips, not Pearson's.
