What Duolingo score do you need for RIT?

Rochester Institute of Technology asks undergraduates for a Duolingo English Test score of 120 for direct admission consideration, and scores of 119 or lower are considered for conditional admission with English study first. Graduate minimums are set on each degree page: for example, 130 for the Computer Science MS and 120 for the Electrical Engineering MS.

Self-reporting and IELTS comparison

RIT accepts self-reported Duolingo scores to apply at both levels. Undergraduates can report them in the application, by email or through a counsellor, and admitted students submit official scores once they choose to enrol. Graduate applicants enter scores in the application or portal, and an uploaded copy counts as unofficial.

IELTS comparison: the undergraduate FAQs set IELTS 6.5 for direct admission, and both graduate degree pages ask for IELTS 6.5.

If your score is lower

All admitted undergraduates in the conditional range must take English language instruction for non-native speakers before starting academic coursework. The graduate degree pages say international students below the minimum may be considered for conditional admission, and that each programme looks for balanced sub-scores when deciding on extra English courses.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your RIT programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
