How Seton Hall handles TOEFL scores

The graduate catalogue says applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not completed a U.S. degree, submit official TOEFL, IELTS or other approved test scores in line with the requirements of the department or college they apply to. The School of Diplomacy graduate admissions page gives Seton Hall's institution code as 2811.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.0, the Stillman FAQs at 6, and the MHA page at 6.5.

TOEFL iBT score reports issued since January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 total; see our guide to the new TOEFL score scale. Where a page above gives only a 0 to 120 figure, that is the figure this guide reports.

If your TOEFL score is below Seton Hall's level

Undergraduates who are academically qualified but short on English may gain provisional acceptance with placement into Seton Hall's English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, then move into degree study once they complete it. At graduate level, the catalogue says applicants taught in English at school or holding a U.S. degree may ask their college for a waiver, and the Stillman FAQs waive the test for those whose undergraduate degree was taught in English at an accredited university.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Seton Hall programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
