Who does not need a test

The FAQ says no test is needed if you live in a country where English is the official language, or if you attend a school where the language of instruction is English. A test is required if your country's official language is not English and your secondary education was in another language.

The two pages do not describe scores below 6.5 in the same way. The how to apply page sends you to conditional admission, while the FAQ sets a 5.5 floor. If you hold a score between 5.5 and 6.0, ask the international admissions office which applies to you.

Conditional admission through partner programmes

If you do not reach the listed scores but meet the academic requirements, Siena can give a conditional letter of admission so you can attend one of its approved partner programmes. Once you complete the programme you are fully admitted. Fall deadlines are 15 November for priority consideration and 15 February for regular admission, and the spring deadline is 1 November.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on the Siena admissions page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Siena University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
