Waivers

You may qualify for a waiver if you completed your full secondary or post-secondary education in an approved English-speaking country, a list that includes Nigeria, Ghana, the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada (except Quebec). India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are not on it. Twelve credit hours with a C or better at a US institution or at one in an approved country also qualify, as does the advanced level of the Texas Intensive English Program (TIEP).

The pages stress that waivers are not automatic; each request is reviewed and you may still be asked for a score.

Sending scores

Scores must be less than two years old. Residual (institutional) TOEFL exams taken elsewhere are not accepted, and soft copies sent by email or uploaded to the portal will not complete your file; the testing agency must send scores to Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions directly. After admission, the master's page lists proof of funds of $36,777 for graduate students and $45,511 for the 11-month MBA.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your A&M-San Antonio programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Texas A&M University-San Antonio publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
