University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Texas Lutheran University?

Texas Lutheran University asks IELTS 6.5 for first-year, transfer and graduate international applicants, or TOEFL iBT 80. Its checklists apply the same minimum to the face-to-face MS in Data Science and Master of Athletic Training. Waivers and substitutes

The page says any student, whatever their nationality, who completes secondary education or earns a tertiary degree from an accredited institution in Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the Bahamas or the United Kingdom is exempt from submitting English proficiency scores.

Undergraduates whose native language is English may send SAT or ACT results instead: 500 on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section, or 21 on the ACT English and Reading sections. Graduate and doctoral students graduating from a regionally accredited institution within the United States do not need to submit proof of English proficiency.

Other documents and how to check

The undergraduate checklists also ask for a Confidential Report of Proficiency in English form, and say scores must be sent directly from the testing service. The page lists TOEFL and IELTS only, not PTE Academic or Duolingo.

The page also notes that international students on face-to-face programmes need a non-immigrant visa, and that online programmes do not give one.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Texas Lutheran programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Texas Lutheran University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
