How UC Santa Cruz handles TOEFL scores

UCSC Graduate Admissions accepts only valid scores, and TOEFL scores expire after two years. Scores must be reported electronically; paper reports are not accepted and staff will not look up individual scores. Results from the TOEFL ITP Plus China Edition are not accepted. Each programme sets its own deadline for scores to arrive.

For comparison, the graduate page sets IELTS Academic at 7 overall (8 in Speaking for TA roles), and the UC undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below UC Santa Cruz's level

No conditional admission is described. Graduate applicants who completed a four-year bachelor's degree at an English-speaking institution can request an admission waiver in the application, but must also choose a back-up test in case it is refused, and waivers are issued only after an offer. A separate TA waiver exists for holders of an accredited US master's degree with TA experience there.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UC Santa Cruz programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
