Visa English requirements

Do you need a new English test to extend a UK Student visa?

Not if you already proved English at the level your new course needs. Gov.uk exempts you if you proved your level in a previous visa application, and Appendix English Language says this counts at the level required for the current application. Moving from a B1 course below degree level to a degree course means showing B2 with a test, a qualification or a university assessment.

The previous-application rule

Rule EL 3.1 of Appendix English Language says you meet the requirement if you already showed it "at the level required for their current application" in a previous successful application. The Student visa English page lists "you proved your level of English in a previous visa application" among its exemptions.

Student visa, B1 shownBelow degree levelNo

If you need new evidence

The routes are the same as for a first application: a SELT taken in the 2 years before you apply (rule EL 6.1), a degree taught in English, a UK school qualification, or an assessment by a higher education provider with a track record of compliance for degree-level study.

Other rules when you extend

Your CAS must confirm the new course meets the academic progress requirement (Appendix Student ST 23.1(p)). You do not need to show maintenance funds if you have been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months. The extension page gives the fee and steps. Immigration rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current rule on the gov.uk Student visa English page before you book a test or apply. Frequently asked questions

Do I need IELTS again for a PhD after my UK master's?+

Not if you showed B2 in your master's Student visa application; a PhD also needs B2, so the earlier proof covers it.

I did a foundation course on B1. Do I need a new test for my degree?+

Yes, you need B2 evidence, because B1 does not meet the degree-level requirement. A university assessment, SELT or qualifying degree can provide it.

How old can a SELT be?+

Appendix English Language requires a test passed in the 2 years before the date of application.

Do I need to show funds when I extend?+

Not if you have been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months on the date you apply.
