How UM-Dearborn handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduates may take the TOEFL more than once, but only the most recent score is considered, and scores more than two years old are not accepted. The graduate catalog gives TOEFL institution code 1861. Meeting the minimum earns consideration, not guaranteed admission.

TOEFL iBT score reports issued since January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 total; see our guide to the new TOEFL score scale. Where a page above gives only a 0 to 120 figure, that is the figure this guide reports.

For comparison, UM-Dearborn asks for IELTS 6.5 at both levels.

If your TOEFL score is below UM-Dearborn's level

Undergraduates can instead complete two semesters of transferable English composition, equivalent to Composition 105 and 106, with a C or better in both. Applicants who have finished the first course with a C and are taking the second may be offered conditional admission. Graduate applicants with a degree taught entirely in English may be exempt.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UM-Dearborn programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
