Graduate admission: IELTS 6.5
IELTS, TOEFL and the Michigan English Test are accepted for every graduate program; some programs also accept Duolingo. The minimums are IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 79 for most programs and 84 for PhD, EdD, EdS and Psychology (MS), Duolingo 105, and MET 57 (59 for PhD and the Clinical Health Psychology MS). PTE is not listed. See graduate admissions.
You may be exempt if you earned, or will earn, a bachelor's or master's degree from an institution where the language of instruction is exclusively English; the university may ask your school to verify this. Degrees from the US, Australia or the UK are exempt.

Undergraduate admission
Undergraduates who cannot show English another way take TOEFL (79 iBT, 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 105 or MET 57. Only your most recent score counts, and scores more than two years old are not accepted. First-year students can instead use two full years of general-track English at a US high school with C or better, or SAT/ACT verbal results; transfer students can use two semesters of transferable English composition with C or better. See undergraduate international admission.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UM-Dearborn sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UM-Dearborn graduate admissions page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the University of Michigan-Dearborn publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
