What IELTS score do you need for Wayne State University?

You can start the review by uploading an unofficial score report; once admitted, you must send an official score from the testing agency. Scores must be no more than two years old, cannot be institutional and cannot be passed on by another university. The Graduate School calls its minimums "the absolute minimum", and programs can set higher ones. IELTS appears in a list of scores Wayne State will "under most circumstances" also consider, and IELTS Indicator is not accepted. The Michigan English Test (64) is the other option. If you meet your program's academic requirements but not the English one, you may receive provisional admission through Wayne State's English Language Institute (ELI) and study there full time until you meet the requirement. Doctoral applicants cannot take this route. The graduate bulletin adds that some units may grant qualified admission to strong applicants whose TOEFL scores fall slightly below the minimum, so ask your program director.

You are exempt if you completed a bachelor's degree or higher in a listed country, such as the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada (except Quebec), Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or South Africa, and the exemption also needs a course-by-course evaluation from an approved evaluator. India is not on the list, so Indian graduates need a test score.

Undergraduate applicants need IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 (4.5 for tests from 21 January 2026), Michigan English Test 64 or Duolingo 110, sent directly from the testing agency. You are exempt if English is your native language, if all your secondary or post-secondary education was in the US, Canada or a listed English-speaking country, if you hold a US associate degree, or if you have US transfer credit for Wayne State's composition courses with a 2.0 GPA. Finishing the highest level of the English Language Institute also meets the requirement.
