What IELTS score do you need for Western Michigan University?

Most graduate programs ask for IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 80 (4 on the 2026 scale), TOEFL Essentials 8, PTE 54, Duolingo 105 or Michigan English Test 57. Accountancy (M.S.), Music Therapy (M.M.) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (M.A.) require higher scores, which the page does not state. You need no test if you completed four years of upper secondary school, or one year of full-time university study, in a listed country. The list includes the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Ghana and the Philippines; for asterisked countries such as Canada, Kenya, Singapore and South Africa, the waiver applies only if you studied in an English-language system. India is not on the list.

Undergraduates need IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 71 (4), PTE 48, Duolingo 100, Michigan English Test 48 or SAT EBRW 500, among other routes. Aviation Flight Science asks for IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 91 (4.5), PTE 64 or Duolingo 115.

If your score is lower, the Pathway Program lets you take English and academic courses together over two semesters, Pathway 1 and Pathway 2. With IELTS 5.5, a writing score below 5.0 places you in Pathway 1 and 5.0 or above in Pathway 2; graduate students enter Pathway 2 with IELTS 6.0.
