How the University of Akron handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduate admissions says TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date and accepts all TOEFL results from ETS, but not Institutional TOEFL results. The graduate pages also refuse scores more than two years old. Both use code 1829.

Teaching assistants whose first language is not English must be certified in oral English before they can teach: a TOEFL iBT speaking score of 23 or more, a High Pass on the U-ADEPT, or 7 in IELTS speaking.

For comparison, the undergraduate page asks for IELTS 6.0 and the graduate application page asks for IELTS 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below the University of Akron's level

Graduate applicants can meet the requirement by completing a full course at Akron's English Language Institute (ELI), an intensive 18-hours-a-week programme, and testing out at the advanced level. Undergraduates who have passed an ESL or ELI programme at another regionally accredited college or university also meet it.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your University of Akron programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
