What IELTS score do you need for the University of Akron?

Graduate applicants whose native language is not English submit TOEFL 79 (old scoring) or 4 (new), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 115 or LanguageCert Academic 70, no more than two years old (university code 1829); some departments ask for more. Alternatives are finishing the English Language Institute and testing out at the advanced level, 24 upper-level undergraduate or 18 graduate credits at a US college with a 3.0 GPA, or completing a degree outside the US at a university where English is used for all administration and all instruction. Undergraduates can use TOEFL iBT 71 (3.5 after 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.0, SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 500, ACT English 18, Duolingo 95, LanguageCert Academic 65, Cambridge Advanced 169 or PTE 48. TOEFL, IELTS, SAT and ACT scores are valid for two years. See undergraduate admissions.

The requirement is waived after three or more years of high school in a listed country (India and Pakistan are not listed) or at a school whose primary language of instruction is English, as shown by your transcripts and high school profile. IB, A-level, AP and CLEP English results can also qualify.
