Subscores, validity and the IELTS comparison

Undergraduates whose Duolingo writing score is below 110 must take Undergraduate Academic Writing (ELC 111), and those below 110 in speaking take Undergraduate Academic Speaking (ELC 110), alongside their degree courses. These courses count toward full-time enrolment.

Graduate scores must be fewer than two years old at application, and the Graduate School accepts super-scores. Official scores, sent from the testing agency, are needed only after admission. International teaching assistants must take an ITAP placement examination.

The undergraduate page lists IELTS 6.0 beside the DET 110; the Graduate School lists IELTS 6.5 with no subscore below 6 beside the DET 120.

Conditional admission and pathways

Graduate applicants who miss the minimum may be considered for conditional language admission. They must complete the English Language Institute's Intensive English Program with a 3.0 GPA in levels four to six, or meet the test minimums, before becoming eligible for UA-based financial support. Undergraduates who do not meet the requirements may be eligible for the Pathway to UA programme.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Alabama programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
