Validity, teaching assistantships and the IELTS level

English tests must have been taken within the two years immediately before the semester you want to start. Graduate students must complete any ELAC placement within their first year in the Graduate School.

Graduate assistantships with direct student contact need separate spoken and written English evidence, even if you were exempt for admission. The page's spoken English list for these roles names PTE, TOEFL, IELTS (7.0 speaking), iTEP, C1 Advanced and the Spoken Language Proficiency Test, or a training course; Duolingo is not on it. The page gives sending codes for TOEFL and IELTS only, so ask admissions how to route a Duolingo score.

On the same page, IELTS Academic is 6.5 for admission, and IELTS General Training is not accepted.

If your Duolingo score is short

The page says no measures of English proficiency other than the listed tests are accepted for admission, so a score below 110 means retaking a test. Scoring 110 to 125 gets you in, but with required writing courses, so aiming for 130 saves a course.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your University of Arkansas programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
