Minimum English scores at Auckland
Scores below come from Auckland's undergraduate and postgraduate English language requirement pages. You must meet the score in one sitting of your chosen test. The TOEFL iBT 6-point scale replaced the 120-point scale in January 2026; Auckland still accepts 120-point results taken within the normal two-year validity period. For PTE, you must authorise the university to view and verify your scores.
Duolingo English Test: not listed among Auckland's approved tests on either page, so do not plan on it.

Programmes that ask for more
Every Auckland programme page states its own IELTS minimum, and some are higher than the floor. For example, the Bachelor of Nursing page lists IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0. After graduating, registration with the Nursing Council has its own English rules; see our IELTS for nurses in New Zealand guide.
Auckland also warns that some Arts, Education and Social Work programmes need extra evidence of English for professional registration, and that some accept only IELTS. Check the programme page before you choose a test.

Auckland states that IELTS One Skill Retake is now accepted. The retake must be completed within 60 days of the original test and taken as a One Skill Retake (undergraduate page). Results are valid for two years from the date on the test certificate to the start of your studies.
If you hold a conditional offer, the university's English Language Academy runs pathway courses: the Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP), the English Pathway for Undergraduate Studies (EPUS) and the English Pathway for Postgraduate Studies (EPPS). A C- grade meets the undergraduate standard and a B- meets the postgraduate standard. Enrolment is at your own expense.
The New Zealand student visa does not set an IELTS band of its own: the university decides whether your English meets its entry standard, and its offer of place is what you submit. So the scores on this page are the ones that matter. Auckland can change them for a new intake; check the linked page before you book a test. This guide restates the university's pages; it is not admissions advice.
