What IELTS score do you need for the University of East London?

UEL lists IELTS Academic, IELTS for UKVI, LanguageCert Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Trinity ISE, Cambridge IGCSE, Oxford ELLT and Skills for English SELT. It does not accept IELTS General, TOEIC, Duolingo, or IGCSE and O Level English Literature. PTE, TOEFL and LanguageCert scores for each IELTS level, and whether IELTS Online is accepted, are not stated by UEL on the pages read, so the course page or admissions team sets them.

UEL's India page says it accepts a medium of instruction letter as an alternative to IELTS for recent graduates who meet its entry requirements. For undergraduates, it waives the test for students who studied in English medium throughout and achieved qualifying results in the Higher Secondary Certificate, Standard 12, AISSCE, ISC or Intermediate certificate, but the grade needed is not shown on the page.

UEL's Nigeria page lists WAEC among accepted English qualifications; the grade needed is not stated. The Pakistan page lists IELTS, PTE and the Oxford test, with no school-English route. Routes for Nepal and Bangladesh are not stated by UEL on the pages read.

UEL's requirements page says its pre-sessional, run with Malvern House London, lasts 5 to 11 weeks depending on your level. Its Pre-sessional English page describes a 5-week course, entered at IELTS 5.0 for 5.5 courses, 5.5 for 6.0 courses and 6.0 (5.5) for 6.5 courses. The two pages differ on length, so check with UEL. You do not apply separately; UEL decides whether you need it.

Per UEL's fees page, a £1,500 deposit starts pre-CAS checks and a further payment is needed for the CAS. Its deadlines page for September 2026 set the deposit deadline at 12 August and a pre-CAS interview deadline of 17 August.

For a Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level, per gov.uk. At degree level, gov.uk adds, your university can assess your English itself and may ask you to take a different test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UEL programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
