Courses at IELTS 7.0 (e.g. Nursing, Midwifery, MSc Clinical Research)65No component below 61

Validity and the IELTS level

The table gives PTE Academic a two-year validity period. It does not say whether PTE Academic Online is accepted (it names IELTS Online as accepted) or give an institution code. Some courses set their own IELTS band rules, such as 6.5 in writing for several MSc computing and science programmes, and the page gives no separate PTE figure for those, so check with admissions.

Pearson's own PTE Core FAQ describes PTE Core as a general English test that is initially suitable only for work and migration routes to Canada, and says PTE Academic is the test accepted for university study.

For comparison, the page says the general requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall with no section below 6.0.

If your PTE score falls short

You can meet the requirement by completing one of the University of Galway's Pre-Sessional or Pre-Masters programmes with at least 70% overall and 65% in each module. The page also reminds visa applicants that their English qualification must meet Irish immigration requirements.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Galway programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
