Other ways to show English

First-year applicants without a test can use a C or higher in an in-class English composition course at a regionally accredited US college (online classes are not accepted), IB English A1 or A2 at grade 3 or higher, AP English at 3 or higher, SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing of 480 or higher, a GCSE or GCE English pass at A to C, Trinity ISE II, or CEFR B2+.

Graduate applicants are exempt if their native language is English or they hold a bachelor's or master's degree from a country where the native language is English.

International Pathway Program

First-year applicants who do not meet the English requirement can begin their degree in Hartford's International Pathway Program (IPP). The graduate page lists no pathway beyond the waiver.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Hartford programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Hartford publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
