University English requirements

What PTE score do you need for the University of Manchester?

Manchester sets English scores course by course, but its admissions page gives typical PTE Academic ranges against each IELTS level: 64 to 69 for courses at IELTS 6.0, 70 to 75 for IELTS 6.5 and 76 to 78 for IELTS 7.0. PTE Academic, PTE UKVI and when Manchester needs a SELT

For degree-level study Manchester accepts "Pearson PTE Academic (UKVI and non-UKVI versions)". For courses below degree level, such as a separate foundation course or a separate pre-sessional English course, it requires a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test taken in person, and lists Pearson PTE Academic (UKVI) as one. A SELT is also required for an integrated course on a joint CAS.

In both lists the page says it does not accept Pearson PTE Academic Online or PTE Academic Home. Tests are valid for two years after the test date and must still be valid on the first day of Welcome Week. The page gives no Pearson institution code.

If your PTE score falls short

The page lists separate pre-sessional English courses among those needing a SELT, so a student joining one on its own would need the UKVI version of PTE. Check the course profile for the exact overall and sub-skill score before booking.

For a Student visa, gov.uk asks for English at CEFR B2 for study at degree level or above and B1 below degree level, and says a university can assess degree-level applicants' English itself and may ask for a different test (gov.uk).

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Manchester programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
