How UMD handles Duolingo scores

For undergraduates, UMD works with testing services to authenticate results, and an authenticated score counts as official. Applicants should include a copy of their score report with the application.

Graduate applicants must have scores sent directly by the test agency; reports uploaded to the application or emailed are not official. Matching can take four to six weeks, and official scores are needed before visa documents are issued. Programmes may set higher requirements, and graduate teaching assistants must meet a minimum English speaking requirement.

For comparison, the same pages set IELTS at 6.0 for undergraduates and 6.5 with 6.5 in Writing and Reading for graduate study.

If your Duolingo score is below UMD's level

Undergraduates can also meet the requirement through AP, A-level or IB English, 26 or more transferable US college credits, a year at a US high school, or completing Minnesota English Language Program Level 4. Graduate applicants can qualify through recent post-secondary study in the US or a listed country.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UMD programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
