Test rules and sending your score

Portsmouth asks you to nominate the University of Portsmouth so it can view your PTE certificate online and verify your results. The page states: "The PTE Academic Online is not accepted." It says PTE is recognised by UKVI and so can be used if you are joining a foundation or pre-sessional English course.

For comparison, the same page asks IELTS 6.0 with no component below 5.5 for most bachelor's degrees and IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 with no component below 6.0 for most master's degrees.

If your PTE score falls short

Portsmouth runs pre-sessional English programmes. The page says that for a pre-sessional or foundation course you must take a UKVI-approved test, and PTE is accepted for those routes at 59 with 59 in each component for foundation entry.

For a Student visa, gov.uk asks for English at CEFR B2 for study at degree level or above and B1 below degree level, and says a university can assess degree-level applicants' English itself and may ask for a different test (gov.uk).

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Portsmouth programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
